Walter Valentini was born in 1928 in Pergalo, located in the province of Pesaro in the region of Marche in Italy. From 1947 to 1948 he resided in Rome and in 1949 he moved to Milan where he studied under Max Huber, Albe Steiner and Luigi Veronesi, all talented artists in their respective fields. In 1950 he moved from Lombardy to Urbino. He lived here until 1955 and attended the Scuola del libro – Institute of Fine Arts. It is during this period of time he discovered engraving and came into contact with Renaissance culture which would go onto influence him greatly in his future artistic endeavors.
Valentini is known for his etchings. He gained popularity in the eighties through these abstract works which he brought to life on either wood or paper. Each piece was defined by its geometry and rhythm. His earlier influences from Urbino come through in his work, with most of his pieces showcasing elements of the Renaissance utopia of the “Ideal City”. This can be seen in the stylised archways and the open geometry and incomplete circles all speaking to meticulous planning but unfinished architecture showcasing incompleteness.

Walter Valentini’s artwork was chosen for his famous “Etchings”, which translates in Italian to ‘Acquaforte’. His art was one of the inspirations behind our brand identity. The stylised arches that are prominent in his artwork and the colonial architecture of the building were incorporated into the design of our logo, as well as the arc. A selection of his original artwork can be seen on display at the restaurant as a tribute to the inspiration he has provided in bringing our passion to life in the heart of the city of Galle. All these well-thought details come together to bring an authentic and immersing taste of Italy’s beauty and culture on the shores of another beautiful land that is filled with its own wondrous allure.
